On the 26 th of January 2022 he received the Medal of Order of Australia (OAM) for services to
Medicine in the field of urology.

He was responsible for introduction of urological laser surgery and minimaly invasive kidney surgery
in Tamworth and in 2019 following extensive effort he was also responsible for introducing robotic
surgery in Tamworth leading to installation of the first regional Da Vinci Surgical robot in NSW.

Urology New England has been in its current location at 9 Dean Street Tamworth since October 2008. It is within walking distance of Tamara Private Hospital and a short drive from Tamworth Hospital. Dr Samali operates at Tamara Private and Armidale Private Hospitals and consults from 9 Dean Street premises in Tamworth and from consulting rooms at Armidale Private Hospital.

Urology is a sub speciality of decipline surgery dealing with urological organs including kidneys and andrenal glands, ureters, bladder, prostate and genital organs.

Dr. Samali has extensive expertise in management of urological condition, in particular cancer
affecting urological organs. He routinely performs laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) for management of
cancer of kidneys, adrenal glands and prostate. To date he has performed in excess of 3500 radical prostatectomy ( surgical removal of prostate) operations for management of prostate cancer. Following introduction of robotic surgery most cancer operations are now performed with the assistance of the surgical robot. To date Dr Samali has performed nearly 600 robotic operations and he is accredited as a proctor for robotic surgical procedures.

This is considered very high volume and translates to superior ability to deal with complex circumstances at the time of surgery and in turn providing the safest and best possible outcomes.

Apart from cancer management he is responsible for introduction of urological lasers to the area and has extensive experience in use of laser in management of prostatic enlargement and stone disease of the urinary tract, with associated benefits of more accurate treatment and shorter stay in hospital.

Dr Samali also has a large experience in prosthetic urological surgery including penile prosthetic surgery for management of erectile dysfunction and placement of slings and artificial urinary sphincter for management of urinary incontinence.

Needless to say Dr Samali deals with all manner of urological problems from the most routine to the most complex. If you have the need to discuss or seek advice or management for any urological problems you should expect an open dialogue, a friendly and understanding discussion without use of medical jargon and above all plenty of experience to guide you through what could be a very stressful situation. This is what Dr Samali promises to bring to the table.

Robotic Surgery

New technology allows us to provide our patients with better surgical outcomes while in the meantime less invasive approaches are undertaken. As far a Prostate cancer surgery is concerned the state of the art technology is robotic surgery using the da Vinci robotic system.

With this approach laparoscopic “keyhole ” technique is enhanced by the extra advantage of more precise and greater range of motion and excellent vision provided by the robotic instruments. It therefore allows for better preservation of function including erectile and urinary functions. It also allowes for early discharge from hospital with majority of patients discharged a day or two following the operation.

Majority of patients requiring a prostate operation for cancer would be candidates for this approach. This also has great application in those who require removal of part of a kidney “partial nephrectomy” for cancer management. Another common use of robotic surgery is in surgical management of massively enlarged prostate where routine endoscopic procedures are unlikely to provide long term benefit. This procedure is called enucleation of prostate.

All manner of robotic urological procedures are provided via Urology New England by Dr Samali at Tamara Private Hospital in Tamworth. A thorough assessment is however required before decision regarding suitability for an operation is made.
